The name "Halbo"

Sometimes one can learn a lot about a family by looking at their first names. This was especially true during the times when children were given the first names of their parents or grandparents. A few names occur very frequently in the Kuipers family tree and the name "Halbo" is one of these. This unusual name was found very useful to help trace the family through the ages.

"Kuipers" is a very common name in the Netherlands and specifically Friesland. While researching the family history in the Netherlands it was found very convenient to use the name "Halbo" as a differentiating first name to ensure that we stayed on the right course instead of wandering off into the realms of other, non-related branches of the Kuipers name. Here we can see where that name entered the family line. The wife of Dirk Willem Kuipers was Antje Halbes (meaning Antje, daughter of Halbe). Their third child was named "Halbe" after his maternal grandfather and he came to write his name as "Halbo".

Future genealogists will most likely despair of the modern practise of giving the children names that are totally unrelated to their ancestors.
